    The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, lead ship of Carrier Strike Group 11, called upon Busan Port prior to a joint U.S.-Korea naval exercise marking the 60th anniversary of the bond between the United States and the Republic of Korea. “It’s great to be able to meet our friends from the Republic of Korea,“ USS Nimitz Commanding Officer CAPT Jeff Ruth said, adding “this port visit will provide our Sailors and Marines the opportunity to experience this beautiful city.” The USS Nimitz hosted a reception for local leaders in the APP district and also invited area citizens and children from an orphanage in South Gyeongsang Province’s Changwon City’s Jinhae District to tour the aircraft carrier.

    South Gyeongsang Province’s Changwon City Mayor Park Wan-su (at right) celebrated 30 years of sister city partnership with Jacksonville, Florida by hosting a delegation headed by Jacksonville City Council President William Bishop. The American Presence Post’s Consul Jon Yoo delivered remarks recognizing American and Korean citizens’ roles in forging “60 Years of Partnership and Shared Prosperity” and the U.S.-Korea Alliance.

    The American Presence Post spoke about American politics and history to over 550 students at Hyehwa Girls High School in Busan Metropolitan City’s Dongnae District on March 27. After the presentation, the students asked questions about international relations and foreign cultures. At Busan Metropolitan City’s Nam District, the American Presence Post discussed U.S.-Korea relations and cultural communication with local civil servants on March 25.

    Ambassador Sung Kim and the Busan Port Authority New Port Managing Director observe the operations of Busan New Port. Busan is the 5th largest port in the world and handles massive volumes of products as a result of U.S.-ROK trade.

    During the early winter months of 2013, the American Presence Post in Busan reached out to local leaders throughout the APP district, including North Gyeongsang Province’s Sangju City, Mungyeong City, Chilgok County, Yeongdeok County, Gyeongsan City, Gunwi County, and South Gyeongsang Province’s Miryang City, Haman County, Geoje City, and Tongyeong City.

    On a busy visit to Busan, U.S. Embassy Seoul Public Affairs Officer Brent Byers (at left) emphasized women’s empowerment, encouraging young people to pursue their dreams in the global world. Consul Jon Yoo was in Jinju and Busan, meeting with Gyeongsang National University President Kwon Soon-ki on December 3, Tongmyong University President Sul Dong-kun on December 4, and at Korea National Maritime University on December 6.

    Hundreds of students in northern North Gyeongsang Province’s Andong City and Yeongyang County learned about U.S. culture and current events from the visiting American Presence Post. We spoke to middle and high school students at Andong Girls’ High School and Yeongyang Middle and High Schools, also meeting with Yeongyang County Mayor Kwon Young-taek.

    Mayor Hur Nam-sik (left center) visits the U.S. pavilion at the 10th Busan International Seafood Expo. Agricultural Trade Office Seoul Director Michael Fay assisted three U.S. seafood companies at the event, which featured over 110 companies from 20 countries from all corners of the globe, such as China, Chile, Poland, and Senegal, participating in Korea’s largest seafood expo November 15-17.

    South Gyeongsang Province’s Sacheon City, in concert with Korea Aerospace Industries and the Republic of Korea Air Force’s 3rd Training Wing, hosted the 8th annual Gyeongnam Sacheon Aerospace Gyeongnam Sacheon Aerospace Expo, attracting 200,000 visitors October 25-28. The American Presence Post met with local leaders and spoke at the Korea Aviation Polytechnic College.

Through roundtable discussions and lectures, Consul Jon Yoo engaged the region’s undergraduates about recent developments in U.S. – Korea political, economic, and cultural relations.

    Hundreds of law enforcement professionals at Busan Metropolitan City’s Busanjin Police Station listen to the American Presence Post’s presentation on “U.S. – Korea Relations in the 21st Century.” The station covers one of Korea’s most urbanized districts in central Busan, home to around 400,000 residents. Consul Jon Yoo focused the presentation on the latest developments in government-to-government relations.

    The American Presence Post was in Changwon City, the capital of South Gyeongsang Province, and paid a courtesy call on newly-arrived Ambassador for International Relations Yoon Jong-kon (at far right). The Republic of Korea’s second-most populous province with over three million residents, the region is home to some of the country’s leading shipbuilding, automobile, and petrochemical operations.

    Just across the straits and river from the hustle and bustle of Expo 2012, the American Presence Post met with local leaders in western South Gyeongsang Province’s Namhae County, Hadong County, and Jinju City. At the crossroads of southern South Korea and home to almost 450,000 people, new enterprises in aviation and green energy are supplementing the rural region’s traditional strengths in the tourism and agricultural/marine product sectors.

    Hadong County in west South Gyeongsang Province held its annual “wild” green tea festival to celebrate its status as the place where green tea first made its way from China to Korea in the seventh century AD. The APP had the opportunity to meet with regional leaders and partake in the community’s celebration, which entertained citizens of all ages, with traditional local art performances and celebrities from Seoul.

    U.S. Department of Energy Assistant Secretary Peter Lyons spoke about changes in the U.S. nuclear energy program following Fukushima at the 18th Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference (PBNC) on March 21. About 800 nuclear energy scientists, specialists, and government representatives participated in this year’s conference, which was themed ”Sustaining Nuclear Energy through Enhanced Safety and Security.”

The APP encouraged students to consider study abroad in the U.S. at Busan Women’s College, Dongeui Institute of Technology, and the Busan Institute of Science and Technology.

Consul Jon Yoo met with Mayor Lee Chang-hee (left), who described Jinju’s transition from a quiet traditional town to an industrialized regional center, citing the varied public and private sector enterprises that are relocating or considering relocation to the city.

The APP visited this sister city of Salem, Oregon and paid a courtesy call upon Mayor Kim Maeng-gon to learn about the significant economic role Gimhae plays in the region, adjacent to Busan Metropolitan City.

    On the occasion of the New Year, Consul Jon Yoo met with local political leaders over the first two weeks of January 2012, including Saha District Mayor Lee Kyung-hoon, Sasang District Mayor Song Sook-hee, Busanjin District Mayor Ha Gye-yeol, and City Councilman Noh Jae-gab. Mayor Lee describes planned infrastructure projects in Saha District, home to 355,000 people (center).
